How to Nail a Scratch Spin in Figure Skating Without Losing Your Cool
Ready to add some whirl and twirl to your figure skating routine? Look no further than the scratch spin - a classic, crowd-pleasing move that’ll make you feel like a total ice rockstar. Whether you’re in the aspire, pre-pre, or preliminary free skate levels, mastering this spin is all about balance, momentum, and a dash of flair. Let’s dive in!
Getting Comfortable on One Foot
Before you attempt the scratch spin, it’s crucial to feel confident in a basic one-foot spin. Why? Because the scratch spin shares the same entrance technique. If you’re still a bit wobbly on your one foot spins, take some extra time to practice. Trust me, nailing that foundation makes all the difference.
Setting Up Your Scratch Spin
- Same Entry, Slight Twist: Think of it as your usual one foot spin entry, but instead of immediately pulling your free leg in, you’ll keep it out to the side a bit longer.
- Stabilize and Center: With your free leg out, you’ll gain both speed and stability. This helps you center your spin—the key to looking smooth and controlled.
Bringing Your Leg to the Front
Your free leg will move from the side, gradually swinging around to the front. As it does:
🌪️ Pull it in Tight: Once your foot reaches the front, bring your calf and ankle inward.
💪 Mind Your Arms: Don’t forget to pull your arms in as well! Start with them out wide, then move them in front, and finally hug them close to your chest. (Yes, you literally give yourself a mini hug - feel the love!)
The Crucial Hip Lift & Cross
When it’s time to fully cross your leg:
🫴 Lift the Hip: Slightly raise the free leg hip to make crossing easier.
❌ Push Down & Cross: Press your foot down, cross it over, and maintain that tight position. Hello, speed boost!
Practice Makes (Almost) Perfect
Scratch spins might be considered low in competitive base value, but they’re high in satisfaction factor when you land that perfect spin. Practice consistently, stay centered, and don’t forget to keep your arms and leg working together. Feeling dizzy? That just means you’re having fun!
