What I Learned Watching 50+ Skating TikToks in One Sitting
I recently sat down with the intention of watching “just a few” TikTok videos about ice skating. An hour later, I’d watched over 50.
Some would call this DOOMSCROLLING...but this wasn’t a mindless scroll. I was paying attention - looking for patterns, advice, and moments that could actually help me learn to skate better. I’m still early in my skating journey, and while lessons and practice are essential, I’ve realized something surprising: TikTok is low key one of the best places to pick up beginner ice skating tips.
Here are the 3 biggest things I learned after watching 50+ skating TikToks in one sitting.
1. Posture Changes Everything
From figure skaters to roller skaters, one thing stood out across nearly every video: great posture makes skating look effortless.
The best skaters kept their heads up, chins level, shoulders relaxed, and arms placed with intention. It wasn’t stiff, it was poised. Their posture created flow. Even simple moves like glides and crossovers looked graceful and clean, just because their upper body was so well aligned.
I’ve been focused on what my feet are doing, but posture affects balance, control, and how smooth everything looks. I’m now skating with more awareness of what my whole body is doing, not just my blades.
2. Mastering the Basics Is Underrated
Some of the most mesmerizing TikToks weren’t advanced tricks, they were just beautiful basics. Smooth one foot glides. Crisp crossovers. Perfectly timed stops.
In a world obsessed with flashy spins and jumps, it was refreshing to see how much attention creators gave to foundational skills. And honestly? Those are the moves that make skating fun and safe.
I used to feel like I had to “level up” quickly, but now I see the value in making the basics feel good. Mastering the fundamentals is a flex in itself.
3. Falling Is Normal (And Teachable)
I saw more falls than I expected - some funny, some looked pretty painful, but most of pretty textbook. A few creators even posted how to fall safely, complete with tips on protecting your wrists and learning to land without injury.
And they weren’t beginners, either. Even experienced skaters fall. A lot. What mattered was how they got up - quickly, without fuss, and often with a laugh.
I’ve been scared of falling, which held me back. But now I see it as just part of the process. Falling well is a skill—and one worth learning early.
TikTok as a Skating Teacher?
Watching skating TikToks didn’t replace my lessons, but it definitely changed the way I think about skating. It gave me language for what I was feeling on the ice. It reminded me that progress isn’t linear. And it showed me how many skaters of every level are out there sharing what they’ve learned, just to help someone else.
So if you’re a beginner like me, trying to figure out how to glide without panic or cross one foot over the other without collapsing - TikTok might just be your unexpected coach.
